Sucralose
Also known as: E955
EFSA's 2026 re-evaluation confirmed sucralose is safe at the current ADI of 15 mg/kg bw/day for authorised uses, but could not confirm safety for high-temperature baking due to potential formation of chlorinated breakdown compounds. Some peer-reviewed studies suggest gut microbiome alterations.
What it is
Sucralose (E955) is a chlorinated derivative of sucrose used as a high-intensity, non-caloric sweetener.
Non-nutritive sweetener (~600x sweeter than sucrose).
Why it's flagged
- Chlorinated breakdown products at high baking temperatures (EFSA 2026)
- Possible gut microbiome effects in some studies
What regulators actually say
"Sucralose (E 955) continues to be safe for consumers for its currently authorised uses ... ADI of 15 mg/kg body weight per day."
"Uncertainty exists regarding the potential transfer of chlorine from sucralose to organic molecules under prolonged high-temperature conditions."
