Calcium Iodate
Also known as: E916
Calcium iodate is not currently authorized as a food additive in the EU (E916 is not listed in Regulation 1129/2011), although it has long been used elsewhere as an iodine source in salt and dough. Iodine intake is essential, but excessive intake can affect thyroid function.
What it is
Calcium iodate (E916), an inorganic compound used as an iodine source in food fortification and dough conditioning.
Iodine fortificant; historic dough oxidizer/improver.
Why it's flagged
- Excess iodine and thyroid effects at high intakes
- Not authorized as food additive in EU
What regulators actually say
"Calcium iodate (CAS Reg. No. 7789-80-2) is GRAS as a dough conditioner at levels not to exceed 0.0075 percent of the weight of the flour."
"Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 establishes a Community list of food additives approved for use in foods — E916 is not included."
"Excessive iodine intakes can produce thyroid dysfunction."
