Microcrystalline Wax
Also known as: E905ci, E905c
Microcrystalline wax is approved as a food additive when meeting purity specs (limited polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content). EFSA re-evaluated microcrystalline wax (E 905) and concluded no safety concern at reported uses, though comprehensive toxicological data are limited.
What it is
Microcrystalline wax (E905c, also E905ci) is a refined petroleum-derived wax composed of saturated hydrocarbons.
Glazing agent, coating, anti-sticking agent on confectionery and chewing gum.
Why it's flagged
- petroleum-derived; purity must meet specs limiting PAHs
What regulators actually say
