Monopotassium Glutamate
Also known as: E622, Potassium glutamate
EFSA's 2017 re-evaluation derived a group ADI of 30 mg/kg bw/day (expressed as glutamic acid) for E620–E625; no genotoxicity, reproductive, or chronic-toxicity concerns at typical use. EFSA noted exposure may exceed the ADI in toddlers/children with high intake, prompting reduced maximum permitted levels in some categories.
What it is
Monopotassium L-glutamate; potassium salt of glutamic acid used as a flavor enhancer (umami).
Flavor enhancer (low-sodium MSG alternative).
Why it's flagged
- possible ADI exceedance in heavy-use diets
What regulators actually say

"FDA classifies the added MSG to foods as 'generally recognized as safe' (GRAS)."
