Alkaline Sodium Aluminium Phosphate
Also known as: E541ii, E541
EFSA's re-evaluation set a tolerable weekly intake of 1 mg aluminium/kg bw/week and concluded dietary aluminium intake from additives can exceed this in certain population groups. The EU restricted SAP uses post-2014.
What it is
Alkaline sodium aluminium phosphate (basic), an aluminium-containing leavening salt (E541 with E-number 541(ii)).
Leavening/raising agent and emulsifying salt in processed cheese.
Why it's flagged
- Adds dietary aluminium, which can accumulate
- EU has restricted aluminium-containing additives
- Of higher concern for infants/children if exposed regularly
