Copper Sulphate
Also known as: E519, copperII sulfate, copper sulfate, cupric sulphate, cupric sulfate
Copper sulfate is an FDA-affirmed GRAS source of dietary copper. Copper is an essential mineral; safety concerns relate only to overdosing well above food-additive levels.
What it is
Copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4); inorganic copper salt used as a nutrient source for copper.
Copper fortificant; processing aid (color fixative for vegetables in some EU uses).
Why it's flagged
- acute toxicity at high doses (industrial-grade ingestion)
- narrow therapeutic window
What regulators actually say
"Cupric sulfate (CuSO4 . 5H2O, CAS Reg. No. 7758-99-8)... is generally recognized as safe as a nutrient supplement."
"The RDA for adults age 19 and older is 900 mcg daily for both males and females... The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for copper is 10,000 mcg/day for adults."
