Sodium Sesquicarbonate
Also known as: E500iii, E500
Sodium sesquicarbonate (E500iii) is approved in the EU as an acidity regulator/raising agent and is generally recognized as safe in line with other sodium carbonates (FDA 21 CFR 184.1742 covers sodium carbonate). EFSA's reevaluation found no safety concerns at reported uses; main caveat is sodium contribution.
What it is
Sodium sesquicarbonate, a double salt of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na3H(CO3)2·2H2O).
Acidity regulator, raising agent, and processing aid.
Why it's flagged
- sodium content — total dietary sodium consideration
What regulators actually say
"Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3, CAS Reg. No. 497-19-8)... The ingredient is used in food at levels not to exceed current good manufacturing practice."
