Polyglycerol Esters Of Fatty Acids
Also known as: E475, Polyglycerol fatty acid esters
EFSA's 2017 re-evaluation concluded E475 is not of safety concern at reported uses, with no need for a numerical ADI. PEFA is rapidly hydrolyzed to polyglycerols and fatty acids in the gut.
What it is
Esters of polyglycerol with fatty acids; nonionic emulsifier (PGE / PEFA).
Emulsifier and aerator in baked goods, cake mixes, and confectionery fats.
Why it's flagged
- impurity specifications tightened (heavy metals, 3-MCPD, glycidyl esters)
What regulators actually say
"Polyglycerol esters of fatty acids may be safely used as emulsifiers in foods..."
"EFSA concluded that the food additive polyglycerol esters of fatty acids (E 475) was not of safety concern at the reported uses and use levels and that there was no need for a numerical acceptable daily intake (ADI)."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Authorized under 21 CFR 172.854 (polyglycerol esters of fatty acids)
European Union — EFSA
Re-evaluated 2017 - not of safety concern; ADI not numerical
