Polyphosphates
Also known as: E452, Polyphosphate E452
Polyphosphates are authorized food additives in the US and EU. EFSA (2019) lowered the group ADI for phosphates to 40 mg/kg bw/day expressed as phosphorus, noting that dietary exposure may exceed this for some population subgroups, particularly children.
What it is
Polyphosphates (E452), inorganic phosphate salts including sodium and potassium polyphosphate.
Emulsifier, stabilizer, water-retention agent in processed meats, seafood, dairy, and processed cheese.
Why it's flagged
- high dietary phosphate intake linked to cardiovascular risk
- exposure may exceed ADI in children
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates of 40 mg/kg body weight per day expressed as phosphorus."
"Sodium tripolyphosphate is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Permitted as direct food additive (e.g., 21 CFR 182.6760, 182.1810); GRAS for many uses.
European Union — EFSA
Authorized; ADI of 40 mg P/kg bw/day for the phosphate group (EFSA 2019).
