Triphosphates
Also known as: E451, triphosphate, E 451, e-451
EFSA reduced the group ADI for phosphates to 40 mg/kg bw/day in 2019 due to concerns over high dietary phosphorus exposure. High dietary phosphate intake is associated with cardiovascular and kidney risks, particularly in CKD patients.
What it is
Triphosphates (sodium and potassium triphosphate, E451), inorganic phosphate salts.
Emulsifier, stabilizer, sequestrant, water-retention agent, and pH regulator.
Why it's flagged
- High intake linked to cardiovascular and renal effects
- EFSA exposure exceeds ADI in some populations
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates expressed as phosphorus of 40 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day."
"Sodium tripolyphosphate... is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
