Tetrapotassium Diphosphate
Also known as: E450v, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, e450v, E450
Tetrapotassium diphosphate (E450(v)) is an authorized phosphate additive. EFSA's 2019 re-evaluation set a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates of 40 mg P/kg bw/day and warned that high consumers (especially infants/children) can exceed this; high dietary phosphate is also associated with cardiovascular and renal risks in susceptible populations.
What it is
Tetrapotassium diphosphate (potassium pyrophosphate), a phosphate salt used as emulsifier, sequestrant, and buffering agent.
Emulsifier/sequestrant/stabilizer in processed cheese, processed meats, and other foods.
Why it's flagged
- high-phosphate intake associated with cardiovascular/renal effects in susceptible populations
- ADI exceeded by some consumers per EFSA
What regulators actually say
"EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Flavourings established a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day, expressed as phosphorus, for phosphates (E 338-341, E 343, E 450-452)."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Permitted under 21 CFR 182.1 GRAS as miscellaneous and general purpose food additive.
European Union — EFSA
Authorized as E450(v) under Regulation (EC) 1333/2008; group ADI re-evaluated 2019.
