Tetrasodium Diphosphate
Also known as: E450iii, Tetrasodium pyrophosphate, Tetrasodium disphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, TSPP
Tetrasodium diphosphate is approved by FDA and EFSA. EFSA's 2019 re-evaluation set a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day for phosphate additives but warned that infants, toddlers, and children may exceed this when total dietary phosphate is considered.
What it is
Tetrasodium diphosphate (E450(iii), TSPP), a sodium salt of pyrophosphate.
Emulsifier, leavening, sequestrant, buffering agent; improves texture in processed foods.
Why it's flagged
- dietary intake may exceed ADI in children
- concern for individuals with chronic kidney disease
- may contribute to elevated serum phosphate
What regulators actually say
"The Panel set a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw per day, expressed as phosphorus, for phosphates (E 338-341, E 343, E 450-452). The Panel noted that dietary exposure to phosphates may exceed the ADI in infants, toddlers and children."
