Cassia gum (E427) is authorized as a food additive in the EU; EFSA established an ADI and concluded that exposure was below safety thresholds at proposed uses. Not currently approved as a direct food additive in the US (used mainly in pet food in the US).
What it is
Cassia gum (E427) — a polysaccharide gum extracted from the endosperm of Cassia tora and Cassia obtusifolia seeds.
Thickener, gelling agent, and stabilizer; often used in dairy desserts and pet food.
Why it's flagged
- Anthraquinone impurities in unrefined cassia (limited by purity criteria)
