Agar

Agar is GRAS under 21 CFR 184.1115 with specified maximum use levels. EFSA reevaluated agar (E 406) in 2016 and concluded there is no safety concern at reported uses and use levels.
What it is
Agar-agar: a hydrocolloid polysaccharide extracted from red algae (class Rhodophyceae).
Gelling agent, thickener, and stabilizer; sets at higher temperatures than gelatin and is plant-based.
What regulators actually say
"The ingredient is used in food as defined in §170.3(o) of this chapter... at levels not exceeding good manufacturing practice."
