Dimagnesium Phosphate
Also known as: E343ii, Magnesiumhydrogenphosphate, Magnesiumphosphate - dibasic, Dimagnesium orthophosphate, magnesium hydrogen phosphate
Magnesium phosphate is approved as a food additive. EFSA's 2019 reassessment of phosphates established a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day expressed as phosphorus, and noted that dietary phosphate intake from additives can substantially contribute to total phosphorus exposure.
What it is
Dimagnesium phosphate (E343(ii)), a magnesium salt of phosphoric acid.
Acidity regulator, anticaking agent, mineral supplement, and emulsifier.
Why it's flagged
- contributes to total dietary phosphate burden
- concern for CKD patients
- EFSA group ADI 40 mg/kg/day P
What regulators actually say
"Magnesium phosphate (CAS Reg. No. 7757-86-0)... is generally recognized as safe."
"The Panel established a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw per day, expressed as phosphorus, for phosphates (E 338-341, E 343 and E 450-452)."
