Monomagnesium Phosphate
Also known as: E343i, Magnesiumdihydrogenphosphate, Magnesiumphosphate, monobasic, magnesium phosphate
EFSA's 2019 re-evaluation grouped phosphates (E 338-341, E 343, E 450-452) and established a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day expressed as phosphorus. While not genotoxic or carcinogenic, EFSA noted that combined dietary phosphate intake from additives plus naturally-occurring phosphates can exceed the ADI in some consumer groups, particularly children.
What it is
Monomagnesium phosphate (Mg(H2PO4)2·nH2O), an inorganic phosphate salt of magnesium. Part of the E 343 magnesium phosphate family.
Acidity regulator, sequestrant, stabilizer, and leavening agent.
Why it's flagged
- combined phosphate dietary intake can exceed ADI in some consumer groups
- high phosphate intake associated with cardiovascular and renal risks in susceptible individuals
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates of 40 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day, expressed as phosphorus."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Permitted as magnesium phosphate; magnesium phosphate is GRAS for various uses (21 CFR 184.1431).
European Union — EFSA
Permitted (E 343); group ADI 40 mg P/kg bw/day.
