Monopotassium Phosphate
Also known as: E340i, Monobasic potassium phosphate, Monopotassium monophosphate, E 340i, E-340i
Monopotassium phosphate is GRAS in the US and authorized in the EU as E340(i). EFSA's 2019 re-evaluation set a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day for phosphates (as phosphorus) and noted exposure can exceed the ADI in children and high consumers; chronic high phosphate intake is linked to cardiovascular and bone effects.
What it is
Monopotassium phosphate (KH2PO4), an inorganic salt of phosphoric acid.
Buffering agent, sequestrant, leavening, and nutrient (potassium and phosphorus source).
Why it's flagged
- Combined phosphate intake can exceed EFSA group ADI
- Concerns for individuals with kidney disease
What regulators actually say
"Potassium phosphate, monobasic. ... The ingredient is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice."
