Disodium Phosphate
Also known as: E339ii, Disodium monophosphate, Secondary sodium phosphate, E339
EFSA 2019 re-evaluated phosphates (E338–E341, E343, E450–E452) and established a group ADI of 40 mg P/kg bw/day. EFSA noted that highly consuming children, adolescents, and adults may exceed the ADI from cumulative dietary phosphate.
What it is
Disodium phosphate (sodium hydrogen phosphate) — sodium salt of phosphoric acid.
Buffer, sequestrant, emulsifying salt, leavening adjunct.
Why it's flagged
- Cumulative phosphate intake may exceed group ADI in some populations
- Cardiovascular/renal concerns at high intake (especially CKD)
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates expressed as phosphorus of 40 mg/kg body weight per day"
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRAS 21 CFR 182.1778 (sodium phosphate)
European Union — EFSA
Authorised; group ADI 40 mg P/kg bw/day (EFSA 2019)
