Sodium Dehydroacetate
Also known as: E266
Sodium dehydroacetate (E266) is not an authorized food additive in the EU and the E-number is not currently in active food use in the EU. EFSA's 2023 re-evaluation recommended a low ADI (typically not maintaining authorization).
What it is
Sodium dehydroacetate (E266); the sodium salt of dehydroacetic acid, a preservative.
Antimicrobial preservative active against yeasts, molds, and some bacteria. Use in food is not authorized in the EU.
Why it's flagged
- not authorized in EU food applications
- EFSA 2023 reduced ADI; safety concerns at higher exposures
- primarily a cosmetic preservative now
What regulators actually say
