Calcium Disulphite
Also known as: E225, Calcium Disulfite, Calcium Pyrosulphite, Calcium Pyrosulfite
Sulfites including E225 can cause severe asthmatic reactions in sensitive individuals (estimated 5-10% of asthmatics). FDA requires labeling at >=10 ppm and bans sulfite use on raw produce intended to be sold raw.
What it is
Calcium disulphite (calcium metabisulphite) is a sulfite-class preservative releasing SO2.
Preservative, antioxidant, antimicrobial.
Why it's flagged
- Severe asthmatic reactions in sensitive individuals
- Mandatory allergen-style labeling
What regulators actually say
"Oral challenges to detect aspirin and sulfite sensitivity in asthma... double-blind capsule-beverage challenges demonstrated sulfite-induced bronchoconstriction in sulfite-sensitive asthmatic individuals."
