FDA approved Gardenia (Genipin) Blue in July 2025 as a color additive exempt from certification, listed under 21 CFR Part 73. JECFA reviewed safety and concluded dietary exposure does not pose a safety concern.
What it is
Gardenia Blue – a natural blue color derived from genipin (extracted from gardenia fruit, Gardenia jasminoides) reacted with primary amines (often soy protein-derived).
Blue color additive for foods and beverages.
