Caustic Sulphite Caramel
Also known as: E150b, caramel E150b
E150b is FDA-permitted under 21 CFR 73.85 as caramel color. EFSA re-evaluated caramel colours (E150a–d) in 2011 and set group ADI of 300 mg/kg bw/day, with an ADI of 100 mg/kg bw/day for E150c due to 2-acetyl-4-tetrahydroxybutylimidazole (THI).
What it is
Caustic sulphite caramel (E150b) — a Class II caramel color produced by heating carbohydrates with sulphite compounds.
Brown color additive used in cognac, sherry, certain whiskies, and some vinegars.
