Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate
Also known as: E1442
E1442 has been evaluated by JECFA and EFSA and assigned an ADI 'not specified' due to its low toxicity profile. It is poorly absorbed and treated by the body similarly to dietary fiber.
What it is
Hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate (E1442) is a modified starch produced by chemical treatment of starch with propylene oxide and phosphate cross-linkers.
Used as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier in processed foods to improve texture and freeze-thaw stability.
Why it's flagged
- highly processed ingredient
- may contain residual propylene oxide (limited by regulation)
What regulators actually say
"Food starch may be modified by treatment with propylene oxide... not to exceed 10 percent, and treatment with sodium trimetaphosphate."
"The Panel concluded that there is no safety concern for the use of modified starches (E 1404, E 1410, E 1412, E 1413, E 1414, E 1420, E 1422, E 1440, E 1442, E 1450, E 1451 and E 1452) as food additives at the reported uses and use levels."
