Disodium Edta
Authorized food additive at strict use limits. EFSA flagged data gaps (reproductive/developmental toxicity) and is collecting data for re-evaluation.
What it is
Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate, a synthetic chelating (sequestering) agent that binds metal ions.
Sequestrant and color/flavor stabilizer; prevents oxidation by binding trace metals.
Why it's flagged
- EFSA data gaps; re-evaluation in progress
- can chelate dietary metals if intakes are high
What regulators actually say
"The food additives calcium disodium EDTA and disodium EDTA may be safely used in foods... subject to specified conditions."
"EFSA ANS Panel recommended that additional toxicological data should be provided to address the shortcomings in the available toxicity database prior to the re-evaluation of calcium disodium EDTA (E 385)."
