Dimethyl Ether
EFSA evaluated dimethyl ether as a food extraction solvent and concluded its use does not raise safety concerns at proposed conditions, with residual levels expected to be very low. Inhalation exposure at high concentrations causes CNS depression but is not relevant to dietary intake.
What it is
A simple ether (CH3OCH3); a colorless gas used as a propellant and solvent.
Used as an extraction solvent for fats/proteins (e.g., from animal raw materials); permitted as a food processing solvent in EU.
Why it's flagged
- industrial inhalation hazard (not consumer food exposure)
- must meet residual solvent limits
What regulators actually say
"The Panel concluded that the use of DME as an extraction solvent ... does not raise safety concerns provided the residual levels do not exceed 0.009 mg/kg."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
Not commonly listed as direct food additive in U.S.
European Union — EFSA
EFSA found use as extraction solvent for animal proteins/fats safe under proposed conditions.
