Di- And Triphosphates
Phosphate additives are widely used food additives. EFSA's 2019 re-evaluation set a group ADI of 40 mg/kg bw/day expressed as phosphorus and concluded that exposure could exceed this level for some consumer groups, particularly children.
What it is
Generic term for diphosphates (E450) and triphosphates (E451) used as food additives.
Emulsifiers, stabilizers, leavening acids, and water-binding agents in processed foods.
Why it's flagged
- Cumulative dietary phosphate intake may exceed safe levels in some groups
- Concerns for individuals with chronic kidney disease
What regulators actually say
"The Panel established a group acceptable daily intake (ADI) for phosphates of 40 mg/kg body weight per day, expressed as phosphorus... exposure exceeded the proposed ADI in infants, toddlers and children."
