Concentrated Pineapple Juice
Also known as: pineapple juice concentrate
Concentrated fruit juice is functionally an added sugar in many product applications. Even though not labeled as 'added sugar' when used to make 100% juice, when used as a sweetener in other products it counts as added sugar under FDA labeling.
What it is
Pineapple juice that has had a portion of its water removed to concentrate sugars and flavors.
Sweetener and flavoring; sometimes used as a 'natural' sugar replacer.
Why it's flagged
- added sugar when used as sweetener
- high glycemic load
What regulators actually say
"Added sugars include sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices that are in excess of what would be expected from the same volume of 100% fruit or vegetable juice of the same type."
Regulatory status
