Concentrated Grape Juice
Also known as: grape juice concentrate
Functions as an added sugar despite a 'fruit' marketing halo — under the FDA's 2016 final rule, juice concentrates used as sweeteners are counted as added sugars on Nutrition Facts. Same metabolic concerns as other sugars at high intake.
What it is
Grape juice with much of its water removed; concentrated source of natural sugars (mainly fructose and glucose) and grape flavor compounds.
Sweetener, flavor enhancer, and coloring agent in many 'no added sugar' products.
Why it's flagged
- counts as added sugar; metabolic impact at high intakes
