Concentrated Black Carrot Juice
Black carrot juice concentrate is permitted as a coloring food (not a regulated food additive in the EU when used as a coloring food). FDA permits fruit and vegetable juice as a color additive exempt from certification under 21 CFR 73.250.
What it is
Concentrated juice from black carrots (Daucus carota subsp. sativus var. atrorubens), used as a natural color rich in anthocyanins.
Natural red/purple coloring agent; sometimes contributes flavor.
What regulators actually say
"The color additive vegetable juice may be safely used for coloring foods."
"EFSA scientific opinion on the re-evaluation of anthocyanins (E 163)."
