Cichorium Intybus Root Oligosaccharides
Chicory inulin/oligofructose is a non-digestible fiber that EFSA has reviewed favorably for bowel function and post-meal glycemic response. High intakes can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea, especially in those with FODMAP sensitivity or IBS.
What it is
Oligosaccharides (short-chain fructans/inulin) extracted from chicory root (Cichorium intybus).
Soluble dietary fiber, prebiotic, sugar/fat replacer, bulking agent.
Why it's flagged
- GI symptoms (gas/bloating) at high intake
- Possible aggravation of IBS/FODMAP intolerance
What regulators actually say
"A cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of 'native chicory inulin' and maintenance of normal defecation by increasing stool frequency."
"FDA has determined that the following isolated or synthetic non-digestible carbohydrates meet the definition of dietary fiber: ... inulin and inulin-type fructans (including oligofructose)."
Regulatory status
United States — FDA
GRAS as inulin/chicory-derived fiber; recognized as dietary fiber by FDA.
European Union — EFSA
EFSA approved a health claim for native chicory inulin and normal bowel function (2015).
