Caster Sugar
Caster sugar is refined sucrose. WHO strongly recommends limiting free sugars to less than 10% of daily energy (about 50 g/day for a 2000 kcal diet), with additional benefit below 5% (~25 g).
What it is
Finely-granulated refined sucrose (cane or beet) with a smaller crystal size than table sugar, also called superfine sugar.
Sweetener; aerator in baking; texture and browning agent.
Why it's flagged
- adds free/added sugars
- contributes to weight gain, dental caries, NCD risk
- no nutrients beyond energy
What regulators actually say
"Adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. A further reduction to below 5% or roughly 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits."
