Bergamot Orange Flavouring
Also known as: bergamot flavouring
Natural bergamot flavouring from citrus oils is generally recognized as safe in food at typical use levels. Bergamot oil contains bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen), a phototoxin, but flavoring grades for food are typically bergapten-reduced or used at low levels.
What it is
Flavouring derived from bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) peel/oil.
Flavoring agent giving citrus aroma (signature flavor of Earl Grey tea).
Why it's flagged
- bergapten / 5-methoxypsoralen content (photosensitivity in topical use)
- citrus allergen potential
What regulators actually say
