Benzyl Benzoate
Benzyl benzoate is permitted as a synthetic flavoring substance in the US (21 CFR 172.515). EFSA reviewed benzyl derivatives and established a group ADI of 5 mg/kg bw/day for benzyl alcohol and benzyl esters.
What it is
An ester of benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid; naturally present in some essential oils, also synthesized.
Used in low amounts as a synthetic flavoring substance, fragrance, and as a topical scabicide drug.
Why it's flagged
- skin irritation in topical use
- infants and young children may metabolize benzoate compounds less efficiently
What regulators actually say
