Benzophenone-1
Benzophenone-1 is a cosmetic UV filter and is not an authorized food ingredient. The parent compound benzophenone was removed by FDA as a synthetic flavoring substance (2018 final rule) based on NTP carcinogenicity findings in rodents.
What it is
2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone — a UV absorber used in sunscreens, plastics, and cosmetics.
Not a food ingredient. The parent compound benzophenone is no longer permitted as a synthetic flavoring after FDA's 2018 order delisting six artificial flavoring substances, including benzophenone.
Why it's flagged
- NTP found evidence of carcinogenic activity for benzophenone in rodents
- endocrine-disruption signals for related benzophenones
What regulators actually say
"FDA is amending the food additive regulations to no longer authorize the use of benzophenone... as synthetic flavoring substances and adjuvants in food."
