Basil extract is GRAS for use as a natural flavoring under 21 CFR 182.20. Basil contains estragole, a compound that has shown carcinogenic effects in rodents at very high doses; EFSA has evaluated this and current low food use levels are not considered a significant concern.
What it is
An extract of basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum) containing the volatile flavor compounds of basil, often produced via solvent or steam extraction.
Flavoring agent.
Why it's flagged
- estragole content in concentrated extracts at very high intakes (rodent carcinogenicity studies)
