Whole Wheat Soft Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 2 cups warm water (100-110°F)
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (optional)

Method

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 425°F. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets.
  2. 2 Sprinkle yeast over warm water. Stir until blended.
  3. 3 Combine flours in a bowl. Stir in sugar, salt, and yeast mixture. Add enough flour to make a soft, sticky dough.
  4. 4 Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5 Cut dough into 12 pieces. Roll each into a 15-inch rope. Shape into pretzels by crossing ends over the middle loop.
  6. 6 Place pretzels on sheets. Brush with egg wash mixed with 1 tbsp water. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake 15-20 minutes until golden.
