Whole Wheat Bread

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 2 tbsp Crisco
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 cup tepid water
  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • additional whole wheat flour as needed
  • milk for brushing

Method

  1. 1 Mix boiling water, milk, sugar, salt, and Crisco together in a bowl.
  2. 2 Dissolve yeast in tepid water, then add to the mixture along with 3 1/2 cups flour. Mix well.
  3. 3 Let the mixture stand until light, then add more flour to form a soft dough.
  4. 4 Knead the dough, divide into two loaves, and place in greased tins.
  5. 5 Let rise until doubled in bulk, brush with milk, and bake in a 350°F oven for 1.5 hours.
