Vanilla Custard With Meringue
Ingredients
- 1 quart milk
- 1 walnut-sized piece butter
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 4 egg yolks
- 6 tablespoons white sugar
- 4 egg whites
- 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
- Vanilla extract
Method
- 1 Combine milk, butter, cornstarch, egg yolks, and sugar in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and boils.
- 2 Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour the custard into a serving dish.
- 3 Beat the egg whites until foamy, then gradually beat in the powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
- 4 Spread the meringue evenly over the hot pudding. Place in a 350°F oven and bake for 5-10 minutes, or until the meringue is lightly browned.
