Vanilla Custard With Meringue

Ingredients

  • 1 quart milk
  • 1 walnut-sized piece butter
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 6 tablespoons white sugar
  • 4 egg whites
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Vanilla extract

Method

  1. 1 Combine milk, butter, cornstarch, egg yolks, and sugar in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and boils.
  2. 2 Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour the custard into a serving dish.
  3. 3 Beat the egg whites until foamy, then gradually beat in the powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  4. 4 Spread the meringue evenly over the hot pudding. Place in a 350°F oven and bake for 5-10 minutes, or until the meringue is lightly browned.
