Syrup Baked Cornbread
Ingredients
- 2 cups boiling water
- ¾ cup cornmeal
- 1 tsp salt
- 6 tbsp syrup
- 3 tbsp shortening
- 1 ½ cups sour milk
- 1 ¼ tsp baking soda
- 6 tbsp flour
Method
- 1 Place boiling water, cornmeal, and salt in a saucepan. Stir to blend and free from lumps, then cook for ten minutes.
- 2 Turn mixture into a mixing bowl. Add syrup, shortening, sour milk, baking soda (dissolved in milk), and flour. Beat to mix.
- 3 Pour batter into a hot, well-greased baking pan to a depth of one-quarter inch.
- 4 Bake in a hot oven (425°F) for eighteen minutes. Cut into squares and serve.
