Stewed Oyster Loaves

Ingredients

  • 3 French rolls
  • ½ lb butter, divided
  • 1 pint oysters
  • ½ pint water
  • 1 anchovy
  • Pepper and salt to taste

Method

  1. 1 Cut out the crumb from the French rolls.
  2. 2 Heat the hollowed rolls near a fire until hot throughout, turning often.
  3. 3 Melt the butter and brush some inside the heated rolls.
  4. 4 Stew the oysters with water, anchovy, butter, pepper, and salt until thickened.
  5. 5 Fill the rolls with oysters and pour the remaining sauce over the top.
