Spiced Red Lentil Dal

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup dried red lentils
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 chili peppers, split in half

Method

  1. 1 Rinse lentils in a strainer. Combine with 1 tsp oil and 1/2 tsp salt, then boil in 1 1/2 cups water until soft and yellow.
  2. 2 Stir turmeric, cumin, and sugar into the boiled lentils.
  3. 3 Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan. Add chili peppers and onion, stirring until onion turns light brown.
  4. 4 Add 2 tbsp of the spiced lentils to the onion mixture and stir for one minute.
  5. 5 Add the remaining lentils and 1 cup water. Boil for two minutes and serve over rice.
