Spiced Molasses Raisin Cookies
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 6 tablespoons shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 cup seeded raisins
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup cold water or milk
- 1/4 teaspoon mace
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- Syrup for brushing
- Finely chopped nuts for sprinkling
Method
- 1 In a mixing bowl, cream together the molasses, brown sugar, shortening, and egg until well combined.
- 2 Add the raisins, flour, mace, cloves, and ginger. Dissolve the baking soda in the water or milk, then mix everything into a smooth dough.
- 3 Roll the dough on a slightly floured board and cut into desired shapes.
- 4 Brush the tops with syrup and sprinkle with finely chopped nuts.
- 5 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for eight minutes.
