Spiced Hot Cross Buns With Raisins And Citron
Ingredients
- 1 cup scalded milk
- 1/4 cup lukewarm water
- 1/2 yeast cake
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons Crisco
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 egg, well beaten
- Flour (as needed for stiff dough)
- 1/4 cup chopped candied citron
- 1/2 cup seeded raisins
- Milk or beaten egg for brushing
- Flour paste for cross decoration
Method
- 1 Add Crisco, sugar, and salt to the scalded milk; let cool until lukewarm.
- 2 Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water, then add to milk along with spices, egg, and enough flour to make a stiff dough.
- 3 Mix well, add raisins and citron, cover, and let rise overnight.
- 4 Divide dough into pieces, form into buns, and place in a greased pan one inch apart.
- 5 Let rise again, brush with milk or beaten egg, and bake in a moderately hot oven (350°F) for 25 minutes.
- 6 Cool and decorate with a cross using ornamental frosting or strips of paste.
