Spiced Gingerbread Cookies With Citron And Almonds

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups flour
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp cream of tartar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/8 lb citron, chopped fine
  • 1/8 lb almonds, chopped
  • plain white or lemon frosting, for icing

Method

  1. 1 Sift together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and cream of tartar.
  2. 2 Mix the sugar and beaten eggs thoroughly, then combine with the flour mixture.
  3. 3 Stir in the chopped citron and almonds. Roll out dough on a floured board to ¼ inch thickness.
  4. 4 Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake in a 350°F oven for 15 minutes.
  5. 5 Cut into squares or diamonds while warm, then ice thinly with plain white or lemon frosting.
