Spiced Fruit Scones
Ingredients
- 5 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 1/4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup currants or raisins
- 1/4 cup finely chopped citron
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1 egg, beaten
Method
- 1 Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar.
- 2 Rub in shortening, then mix with milk to form a dough.
- 3 Work in currants or raisins, citron, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
- 4 Divide dough into six pieces; roll each to saucer size and 3/4 inch thick.
- 5 Cut each round into four wedges with two cross cuts.
- 6 Brush with beaten egg and bake in a hot oven (425°F) for 15 minutes.
