Spiced Fruit Scones

Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup currants or raisins
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped citron
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 egg, beaten

Method

  1. 1 Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar.
  2. 2 Rub in shortening, then mix with milk to form a dough.
  3. 3 Work in currants or raisins, citron, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  4. 4 Divide dough into six pieces; roll each to saucer size and 3/4 inch thick.
  5. 5 Cut each round into four wedges with two cross cuts.
  6. 6 Brush with beaten egg and bake in a hot oven (425°F) for 15 minutes.
