Spiced Fruit Bread With Candied Citron

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs flour
  • 3/4 cup Crisco
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup sultana raisins
  • 1 cup currants
  • 1/2 cup seeded raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped candied citron peel
  • 1 tsp powdered ginger
  • 1/2 tsp powdered mace

Method

  1. 1 Heat Crisco in milk, then cool. Dissolve yeast cake in a little sugar and stir into the milk mixture.
  2. 2 Stir in flour and salt. Allow dough to rise for four hours.
  3. 3 Mix sugar, fruit, peel, and spices into the risen dough. Let rise again.
  4. 4 Divide dough into two greased loaf tins. Allow to rise for fifteen minutes.
  5. 5 Bake in a 350°F oven for one and a half hours.
