Ingredients
- 1 gallon water
- 1 quart split peas, soaked overnight
- 4 ounces salt pork, cut into bits
- 1 pound lean beef, cut into bits
- 1 stalk celery, chopped fine
- 3-4 slices bread
- Butter for frying
Method
- 1 Combine water, soaked peas, salt pork, and beef in a large pot. Boil slowly for two hours or until liquid reduces by half.

- 3 Stir in the chopped celery and simmer briefly to blend flavors.
- 4 Fry bread slices in butter until quite brown, cut into squares, and serve alongside the soup.
