Orange Cake With Orange Icing

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp orange extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 tsp orange extract

Method

  1. 1 Cream Crisco and 2 cups sugar together. Add salt and well-beaten eggs.
  2. 2 Add orange extract. Alternately add flour, baking powder, and milk. Mix carefully.
  3. 3 Turn batter into a greased and floured cake tin. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for about one hour.
  4. 4 For icing, boil 1 cup water and 2 cups sugar until it forms a soft ball (240°F).
  5. 5 Pour hot syrup over 4 well-beaten egg yolks. Beat until smooth and thick.
  6. 6 Add 1 1/2 tsp orange extract to icing. Spread immediately over the cooled cake.
