Oatmeal Molasses Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted fat
  • About 6 cups bread flour

Method

  1. 1 Scald the rolled oats with the boiling water and let stand until cool.
  2. 2 Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water and add to the oat mixture when cool.
  3. 3 Add the molasses, salt, and melted fat. Stir in enough bread flour to knead.
  4. 4 Turn onto a floured board and knead lightly. Return to bowl and let rise until double in bulk.
  5. 5 Knead and shape into loaves. Let rise until double again.
  6. 6 Bake in a 350°F oven for 45 minutes.
