Ingredients

  • 1½ cups sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 2½ cups flour
  • 1 cup chopped nut meats
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¾ cup milk
  • a little salt

Method

  1. 1 Rub butter and sugar together until light and creamy.
  2. 2 Add egg yolks and beat until smooth.
  3. 3 Sift flour, salt, and baking powder, then add to the mixture along with milk, beating well.
  4. 4 Fold in chopped nuts and stiffly beaten egg whites.
  5. 5 Pour into two 9-inch cake pans or one loaf pan.
  6. 6 Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes for layer cake or 1 hour for loaf cake.
